It's that time again, when Google starts rebuilding their indexes and when the forums fly in to a panic. It's that time when I normally spend my time warning people about analysing too early, but luckily this time I don't need to - read here
And then I'm going to carry on by breaking all my advice and talking about something I see in the upcoming index.
I can get away with it, because it's been a feature of every index for a while and will continue to be.
Whilst anchor text remains the most powerful of all the factors in the ranking mix, it is also subject to more and more abuse and therefore its weighting must and is starting to decline.
There's a rule I use about weightings, it goes:
The more known about a factor is, the more likely people are to use it. The more likely people are to use it, the more likely it is to get abused. The more it gets abused, the less its weighting.
It's a simple concept that has to make sense, it also explains why some of the things many people have forgotten about are beginning to come back.
This is a process that's slow, but it happens time and time again.
Whilst I don't say neglect your link factors, I do say that a wise SEO planning for the future might be well advised to pay particular attention to on the page factors and that adding material of an informational variety to a site would be a good investment of time.
